White House Says Biden Respects National Anthem Ban

(TheFreedomJournal.org)- The NBA’s Dallas Mavericks and their outspoken owner Mark Cuban made headlines this week when the team announced they wouldn’t be playing the national anthem before any of their home games.

That didn’t last very long for the Mavericks, though, as the National Basketball Association quickly stepped in to put an end to the whole thing. They announced this week that all NBA teams would be required to play the national anthem before every game, “in keeping with longstanding league policy.”

Even still, it appears that President Joe Biden actually respected Cuban’s decision to not play the national anthem before Dallas Mavericks home games.

This week, White House press secretary Jen Psaki was asked what Biden thought of Cuban’s decision. She responded:

“Well, I haven’t spoken with the president about the decision by Mark Cuban or the Dallas Mavericks, but I know he’s incredibly proud to be an American, and has great respect for the anthem, and all that represents, especially for our men and women serving in uniform around the world.”

She continued on, saying Biden was in support of athletes kneeling during the national anthem to protest things such as racial injustice and police brutality. Psaki said of Biden:

“He’s also say that, of course, that part of the pride in our country means recognizing moments where we as a country haven’t lived up to our highest ideals, which is often, and at times, when people are speaking to when they take action at sporting events.

“And it means respecting the rights of people, granted to them by the Constitution, to peacefully protest. That’s why he ran for president in the first place, and that’s what he’s focused on doing every day.”

This stance is almost the direct opposite of former President Donald Trump. Trump once urged all professional athletes to “stand tall for our country and our flag.” He supported the NFL when owners were saying players should stand, and then he turned on league officials when they allowed players to kneel during the national anthem.

In the fall, Trump even warned players in the NFL and MLB not to boycott games like players in the NBA did, following some of the social injustice that was going on throughout the country. He tweeted at the time:

“People are tired of watching the highly political @NBA. Basketball ratings are WAY down, and they won’t be coming back. I hope football and baseball are watching and learning because the same thing will be happening to them. Stand tall for our Country and our Flag!!!”

After the NBA demanded that the Dallas Mavericks play the national anthem before home games, Cuban released a statement that said, in part:

“We respect and always have respected the passion people have for the anthem and our country. I have always stood for the anthem with the hand over my heart — no matter where I hear it played. But, we also hear the voices of those who do not feel the anthem represents them. We feel they also need to be respected and heard, because they have not been heard.

“The hope is that those who feel passionate about the anthem being played will be just as passionate in listening to those who do not feel it represents them.”
