Trump May Not Give Bailouts to Sanctuary States

(FreedomJournal.Org)- President Donald Trump has reverted to 2016 Trump lately, and the announcement that he is considering withholding federal bailout funds from sanctuary states is more proof of that. The president suggested on Tuesday that he is considering withholding the money unless the states begin cooperating with the federal immigration enforcement officials.

During a special White House event, President Trump discussed the next round of stimulus money to be distributed to American taxpayers with business leaders. He discussed the option of cutting payroll taxes, a plan he endorsed from the start, but then began talking about the possibility of giving bailout funds to states.

The president also made it clear that he was willing to talk about bailout funds for states over the matter of coronavirus, but drew a line at helping states recover from financial mismanagement that occurred over a long period.

“There’s a big difference with a state that lost money because of COVID and a state that’s been run very badly for 25 years. There’s a big difference in my opinion and, you know, we have to talk about things like payroll tax cuts, we have to talk about things like sanctuary cities, as an example,” he said. “I think sanctuary cities are something that has to be brought up, where people that are criminals are protected, they’re protected, from prosecution I think that has to be…I think that’s one of the problems states have, I don’t think they know they have a problem, they have a big problem with the sanctuary situation.

The president also explained that if state governments wanted to be eligible for the funds, they would have to clamp down on cities within their states that are currently refusing to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“If we are going to do something for states, I think they probably want something having to do with sanctuary cities and other different points that we can discuss a little bit later on,” he said.

In February, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favour of the president after he previously attempted to withhold federal funds from sanctuary cities. It means he does have the power to withhold millions of dollars of grants from the state if they refuse to cooperate with ICE. And if he has. The power to do it, you can expect he is probably going to do it.

The question is, who will cave first? Withholding funds hurts American citizens, and if the Democrats don’t cave, President Trump may be forced to back down or risk being blamed for Americans not receiving the money they need under the new CARES Act stimulus package.
