(FreedomJournal.com) – Senator Mitt Romney, the so-called “Republican” representing Texas, is still in the president’s bad books. Well, in reality, he’s hardly popular with any Republicans at all. After voting to remove the president from office his support among Republicans has plummeted and more Democrats have started looking favorably at the politician.
In what may be an attempt to win favour with the voters, the senator announced on Monday morning that he believes the United States government should provide every American adult with a check for $1,000 to help them see through the coronavirus pandemic.
The proposal was explained in a press release from Romney’s office, in which he said new coronavirus legislation is needed (or changes to bills currently being considered) to ensure that people have the financial resources they need to cope while many people are left without work.
“The House coronavirus response package contains critical measures to help families in Utah and across the nation in the midst of the coronavirus outbreak, and the Senate should act swiftly on this legislation,” the press release reads.
“We also need to urgently build on this legislation with additional action to help families and small businesses meet their short-term financial obligations, ease the financial burden on students entering the workforce, and protect health workers on the front lines and their patients by improving telehealth services. I will be pushing thee measures as senate discussions continue about an additional relief package,” it went on.
Later in the release, Romney suggested two specific measures to help the American people. One is that all American adults should receive $1,000 to help relieve some financial pressure while people are unable to work their normal hours. He also suggested that small businesses should be offered “bridge grants” to apply for Economic Injury Disaster Loans.
Romney said that to ensure people don’t fraudulently use the system, it would include criminal penalties for those who abuse the offer and audits from the SBA’s Inspector General would be necessary to ensure total compliance.
The proposals make Romney the first Republican to propose giving American people money directly. President Trump has proposed entirely different measures that would reduce tax and delay the payment of tax filings due in April.
What do you think – is this a good idea, or is Romney just trying to win back some favor from supporters he lost
