(FreedomJournal.org)- A new poll shows that a majority of Democrats support the idea of defunding the police. It is a shocking revelation that indicates just how far the party has moved to the extreme left.
The poll, which was released on Friday, showed that some 55% of Democrats support the “Defund the Police” promise being pushed by the violent Black Lives Matter movement. Some 64% of the country, according to the poll, strictly opposes the idea.
According to a report from ABC News, significant majorities of American society oppose the “Defund the Police” sentiment and movement, including all of its primary goals. That includes the idea of reforming law enforcement and focusing more financial resources on housing, education, and mental health, rather than giving the police for the resources they need to effectively tackle crime.
It may come as no surprise that the American public, for the most part, supports the police officers who are for many people the first line of defense against violent criminals. While American citizens have the right to bear arms, the police force provides an essential service protecting the American people and for the most part, US citizens are thankful for them.
What may be surprising, however, is that a substantial minority of Americans have fallen for the call to defund the police. 39% of respondents said that they would support reallocating police budgets to public health and social initiatives.
Democrats were most likely to support the plan. Out of all political tribes asked in the poll, Democrats were the only ones who supported the idea of defunding the police in a majority. It goes against presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden’s refusal to adopt the policy. The fact that Biden refuses to adopt it as an official policy for the November election – or at least, his refusal to accept it right now – indicates that he and his team recognize it could lose him the election and would likely only appeal to his own base.
ABC noted that African Americans support the sentiment, but “not overwhelmingly so.” 57% of black respondents supported defunding the police, and 64% supported the less extreme idea of moving some police funding to other areas.
The idea was unpopular among Hispanic and white communities. Almost three-quarters of white Americans oppose defunding the police, and 57% of Hispanics opposed the idea too.
The poll asked 686 American adults about their opinions, and the results came with a 4.2% margin of error. It confirms results of a poll that was published last week, at least for the most part, which showed 65% of Americans opposing the radical idea.
