(FreedomJournal.org)- Online streaming platform Netflix was forced to back down and apologize this week after publishing a poster for a new movie called “Cuties” that features young, pre-teen girls wearing skimpy clothes and in sexual positions. The poster was widely described as “pedo bait” on social media networks and drew criticism from people across the political spectrum.
“We’re deeply sorry for the inappropriate artwork that we used for ‘Cuties.’” Netflix announced. “It was not OK, nor was it representative of this French film which premiered at Sundance. We’ve now updated the pictures and description.”
Anyone with a little background in reputation management will know exactly what trick they pulled in that quote. While Netflix owned up to the mistake and apologized for it, they did also shift the blame a little and doubled down on the legitimacy of the film by referencing the fact it aired at Sundance. Unfortunately for them, though, that doesn’t change the fact that they chose to publish artwork that shows pre-teen girls in sexual poses.
For those of you who won’t be watching it, and that’s probably most of you, it’s a movie that focuses on an 11-year-old girl called Amy who joins a dance troop called “The Cuties” with her school friends. It won the World Cinema Dramatic Directing Award at this year’s Sundance film festival, and it has been widely praised by film critics. It even has a surprising 82% score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is notorious for its harsh criticism of films.
Conservative artist Martina Markota called out the film for being overly sexualized, but noted that the movie was “created for women.”

Twitter user “Weekend Warrior” also noted had Netflix had gone out of its way to change the poster for the movie.
“The thing about the Netflix campaign for Cuties is how disgustingly sexualized these girls are,” the user said.
