Harvard Researcher Pleads Guilty To Lying About Smuggling Research To China

(FreedomJournal.org)- Last week, a Chinese researcher at Harvard University pled guilty to chargers of lying to federal investigators over his role in an effort to smuggle information from the prestigious university’s cancer research department and hand it over to the Chinese Communist Party.

The investigation revealed how several dozen researchers from facilities and institutions across the United States have failed to disclose their financial links to communist China, indicating that the dictatorship could have been smuggling valuable information from American researchers for years.

Crimson reports how Zaosong Zheng pled guilty on Thursday to lying to customs officials after he was discovered in December 2019 trying to smuggle 21 vials of material from Harvard University. The biological material found in the vials were taken from the Harvard Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and were discovered by customs agents in his suitcase.

Zheng first claimed that the vials were given to him by a friend to take back to China, before eventually admitting that they were taken from China.

In what universe did he think the classic “they’re not actually mine” excuse would work?

Under the researcher’s plea deal, Zheng was not charged for smuggling but has been instructed to leave the United States by January 6 next year, giving him weeks to pack up and head back to communist China. Before he leaves, however, there remains a possibility that a judge could impose a prison sentence of up to five years and a total of $250,000 in fines.

A spokesperson from Harvard said that they were thankful that law enforcement officials discovered the attempt at smuggling their work out of the country.

“We are grateful for the diligence and professionalism of federal law enforcement in this case,” they said.

It comes at a time when the Trump administration ramps up restrictions in China. In recent days, the State Department announced that five cultural exchange programs between the United States and China would be ended as they served as “soft power propaganda tools” and offered “carefully curated access to Chinese Communist Party officials, not to the Chinese people, who do not enjoy freedoms of speech and assembly.”

The State Department also revealed how Chinese Communist Party officials would not be eligible to obtain visas to travel to the United States until the country ends its “coercive tactics” that intimidate critics of their oppressive regime and various human rights abuses.

President Donald Trump’s administration continues its crackdown on China even in what could be the final weeks of his presidency…but will it continue under Joe Biden?
